Consultant Appointments – Important Notice

The IMO has received assurances from the HSE that the competitions to recruit Consultants will operate on the basis that applications will be considered separately where candidates are interested in more than one position.

Suggestions that applications would be pooled and Candidates would only be offered one position from such a list emerged in documentation posted on its website by the Public Appointments Service.

The matter was raised by the IMO with the HSE (see text of email to Mr Gerard Barry below) and we have now been assured that candidates can apply separately for posts and that applications will be considered separately rather than having a pooling system apply.

Email to Mr. Gerard Barry, Chief Executive, HSE Employers Agency.

May 6th, 2008.

Dear Mr Barry,

I refer to the documentation entitled “Format of the Competitions” published by the Public Appointments Service with reference to the current cohort of Consultant posts to be filled.

Section 1.iii states that

“If you are interested in more than one position, please indicate your 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice etc., in your covering letter. Please note that you will only be offered one position from this list. If you refuse an offer, it is most unlikely that you will be offered a position that you have ranked lower on the list.”

Both representative bodies had been assured that this approach would not form part of the current recruitment process and accordingly we agreed the basis for the recruitment competition proceeding with the support of the IMO.

This provision has been noted and brought to my attention as a serious concern by both Consultants who will be involved in the recruitment process and prospective candidates.

I would be obliged if you could take steps to have this element of the competition rules rescinded and the standard recruitment terms reinstated as we had been assured would apply.

Yours sincerely,
Fintan Hourihan
